Description

Create your own miniature Japanese rice bowl using the same type of durable material found in professional restaurant food displays.

This hands-on workshop takes place at Sato Sample, a long-established specialist shop in Kappabashi, Tokyo’s famous kitchenware district.

Choose a bowl, rice base, and lifelike toppings from the selection available that day. Arrange the pieces into your own tempura bowl, seafood bowl, or completely original design, then secure everything in place with guidance from the shop staff.

The online booking price covers your reserved workshop place and the stated instruction or English-support services. The bowl, rice base, toppings, and other materials are selected and paid for separately at the shop.

Discover Japan’s restaurant food replicas

Food replicas can be seen outside restaurants throughout Japan, showing customers the appearance, ingredients, and portion style of a dish before they order.

At Sato Sample, professional replicas are produced for restaurants and food-related businesses. During the workshop, you will work with miniature parts made from the same type of vinyl chloride material used for professional displays.

The pieces are approximately one-ninth the size of standard restaurant food replicas, making the finished bowl easy to display and carry home.

Choose your bowl and ingredients

Begin by selecting a miniature bowl and rice base.

Next, explore the toppings available on the day. Options may include miniature tempura, seafood, vegetables, egg, garnish, sauce, or other Japanese-style ingredients.

You decide how simple or elaborate your bowl will be.

Each topping is priced separately, so the final material cost depends on the design you create. The available pieces and prices may change according to stock.

Design the composition

Before attaching anything, experiment with the position, angle, height, and color balance of your ingredients.

A convincing food replica is not simply a collection of realistic pieces. The ingredients must be arranged so the dish appears fresh, generous, and visually appetizing.

You may build the toppings upward for a dramatic tempura bowl, create layers of seafood, or design a balanced bowl with vegetables and garnishes.

The instructor will offer practical advice, but the final composition is your own.

Assemble rather than manufacture the parts

This workshop focuses on arranging and attaching professionally made miniature food-replica parts.

Participants do not mold, cast, sculpt, or paint every ingredient from raw material during the session.

This makes the experience approachable for beginners while still introducing the visual decisions used in professional food presentation.

Attach the toppings

Once you are satisfied with the layout, secure the rice and toppings with wood glue under the instructor’s guidance.

Wood glue is used with consideration for safety and drying time.

Some taller or more complex arrangements require patience and careful support while the adhesive begins to set.

Learn from a long-established specialist

Sato Sample was established in 1925 and continues to produce commercial food replicas in Kappabashi.

During the experience, you may hear about the differences between older wax techniques and the vinyl chloride materials now used for durable professional displays.

Pack your creation carefully

Your finished miniature rice bowl will be placed in a take-home box.

The adhesive will not be fully hardened immediately after the active workshop. Allow at least 30 additional minutes for the piece to begin setting, and continue handling the box carefully afterward.

Avoid turning, shaking, or pressing the toppings until the adhesive has fully dried.

A Tokyo souvenir designed by you

Your finished bowl is not a meal or an edible product.

It is a decorative miniature created from professional food-replica parts and arranged according to your own choices.

Display it at home as an unusual reminder of Kappabashi, Japanese restaurant culture, and your time in Tokyo.
